Beyond the Tailpipe: The Silent Revolution of EV Trucking This World Environment Day

Written by Martin Kelly, Truck Sales eConsultant at Midlands Truck & Van

When we talk about transitioning to electric trucks, everyone immediately points to zero tailpipe emissions. It makes sense—cleaning up our air is vital.

But as an EV Truck Consultant at Midlands Truck and Van, there is another massive environmental benefit that doesn't get nearly enough airtime: Noise Pollution.

Traditional diesel trucks are loud. They thrum, rattle and idle, meaning out-of-hours urban deliveries can cause friction with residents. But switching to electric doesn’t just change what comes out of the back it changes the entire atmosphere of our streets.

Unlocking the Night Economy (Without Waking the Neighbours).

Think about linen deliveries to city-centre hotels or early-morning food drop-offs to restaurants. Moving to an electric fleet introduces a level of residential harmony we’ve never seen before.

  • Whisper-Quiet Deliveries: EV trucks glide through urban areas virtually silently, eliminating the aggressive engine roar during stop-start routing.
  • 100% Electric Fridges: It isn't just the engine making noise; traditional diesel transport refrigeration units (TRUs) hum loudly all night. Moving to a fully integrated electric fridge system ensures the entire vehicle operates in near silence.
  • Fewer Restrictions: Quiet fleets open up opportunities for night-time and early-morning delivery slots, bypassing daytime traffic congestion and boosting operational efficiency.

Silent, But Safe.

"But if they are completely silent, aren't they a hazard for pedestrians?"

It's a question I get asked a lot. Safety is always the priority. Electric trucks are equipped with an AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System). This system generates an artificial, futuristic sound at low speeds so pedestrians and cyclists always know a vehicle is nearby.

Once the truck accelerates past 20 km/h, tyre-to-road friction and wind resistance naturally take over to make the truck audible. The AVAS automatically fades out, maintaining that crucial peace and quiet for local neighbourhoods while keeping urban streets entirely safe.

Let’s Change the Conversation.

This World Environment Day, let's look at sustainability through a different lens. Going electric isn't just about breathing easier—it's about creating calmer, quieter and more harmonious communities.

If your business handles urban, hospitality or temperature-controlled logistics across the Midlands and beyond, let’s talk about how quiet, efficient EV trucks can transform your operations.
