As the UK accelerates toward a zero-emission future, the Government’s Plug-in Truck Grant is helping operators transition to electric vehicles. The scheme provides significant financial support, with discounts applied directly at the point of purchase.

What funding is available?

The level of grant depends on vehicle weight:

  • 4.25–12 tonnes: Up to £15,000 or 20% of the cost
  • 12–18 tonnes: Up to £37,000 or 40%
  • 18–26 tonnes: Up to £52,000 or 40%
  • Over 26 tonnes: Up to £81,000 or 40%

Plug-in Grant

Which vehicles qualify?

To be eligible, trucks must produce zero tailpipe emissions and achieve at least 60 miles (96km) of range. Eligible models include vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz eActros range.

Why this matters to operators

The grant helps offset higher upfront costs while enabling fleets to benefit from lower running costs, reduced maintenance, and compliance with emissions regulations.

As a Mercedes Truck EV Consultant, Martin Kelly's role is to support customers through the transition to electric.

This includes identifying:

  • the right vehicle solutions
  • advising on charging infrastructure
  • ensuring operators maximise available funding.

Supporting Infrastructure: The Depot Charging Scheme

Alongside the Plug-in Truck Grant, the UK Government has introduced the Depot Charging Scheme, designed to support the rollout of electric vehicle infrastructure across fleet depots. The scheme provides funding covering up to 70% of installation costs, including chargepoints and associated civil works, with a maximum of £1 million per organisation. This initiative directly addresses one of the key challenges facing operators—the cost and complexity of installing depot-based charging. When combined with vehicle grants of up to £81,000, operators now have access to a comprehensive support package covering both vehicle acquisition and infrastructure investment, making the transition to electric fleets more viable than ever.

The road ahead

With grants of up to £81,000 available, now is the ideal time for operators to begin their electrification journey and future-proof their fleets.
